I never counted calories in my life and I don’t expect you to. That’s the beauty of a whole food, plant based diet; you don’t concentrate on calories, you concentrate on nutrient density. Plants are the most nutrient dense foods in existence.
The advantages of a vegan, whole food plant based diet is that yes, you’ll lose weight, and yes, you’ll get stronger, and have more energy. But the most important thing is that you will not only feel healthy, you will be healthy.
So, like the Marines, I’m looking for a few good men (and women) who are sick and tired of being sick and tired and are willing to learn a new approach to old problems. I’m sure you will discover that: (1) nothing tastes as good as healthy feels. And: (2) there are no nutrients found in animal-based foods (including protein) that are not better provided by plants.
MY CORE BELIEFS:
When considering the question, “What should we eat and why?” I think it is best to begin by consulting a higher authority.
I don’t know if you recall that at one time the Jewish people were taken into captivity for seventy years. When the Jews are being taken into exile into Babylon, this is what God tells them: “Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce.” (1) And seventy years later, when they leave Babylon and return to their native land, God says, “And I will bring my people Israel back from exile. They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine. They will make gardens and eat their fruit.” (2)
I think it is essential to pause here and think about what God does not say. He does not tell them to make sure that they raise cattle, or sheep or chickens. He does not tell them to make sure they get plenty of protein, or to stay healthy by following a Paleo diet. Remember that the Jews are His chosen people, and although he was disciplining them for their sins, he still wanted to ensure their health and vitality even while they were in captivity. What He does tell them is to plant gardens. And when they return from exile to their homeland, seventy years later, He once again tells them the very same thing.
I believe we should eat a whole food, plant based diet because that is what we are designed to do to obtain optimal health and longevity.
