Did you know that studies show that 55-year-old male and female vegans weigh about 30 pounds less than non-vegans of similar height? I'm hoping that you are asking yourself, how is that possible?
Experiments show that people tend to eat the same volume of food at every meal, regardless of the number of calories it contains, as stretch receptors in the stomach appear to send signals to the brain when a certain volume of food has been consumed.
Fruits and vegetables are usually comprised of between 80 to 90 percent water, and just like fiber can add volume without calories, water can do the same exact thing.
One hundred calories of tomatoes weighs 555 grams. One hundred calories of cheddar cheese, on the other hand, weighs 25 grams. So you can begin to see why those who eat a whole foods, plant based diet tend to consume hundreds of calories less per meal than the person who eats a Standard American Diet.
The beauty then of a whole food, plant based diet is that because most of the food is nutrient dense and low in calories there is little need for counting calories, portion control, or skipping meals. You can eat until you are full with the added benefit of knowing that you are consuming food that is both building health while simultaneously combating disease.
